5 Questions: Greener By Color

In our continuing effort to encourage participation in Fresno’s music scene, we feel it is beneficial to learn about local artists through thoughtful, in-depth interviews. We hope someone does those, because we sure don’t. This is 5 Questions.

Fresno’s Greener By Color performs some of the catchiest indie pop you’ll find in the tri-county area (not a real area). If you don’t believe me, go take a listen on the Greener By Color MySpace page. I’ll wait.

This is Alex:

I spoke with Noah Velarde (vocals, guitar) and Alex Tran (drums) about interesting things.

1. In seventeen words, tell me the story of Greener By Color.

Alex: Once upon a time. This is our first year together as a band. Enjoying each others company.

2. Besides yourselves, who is your favorite band in Fresno and why?

Noah: Well, I would probably have to go with Circles and Circles. Though we haven’t had the opportunity to play a show together, I really like what they do and how they portray themselves as a band.

3. What’s your favorite color?

Noah: My favorite color is green! Although black seems to be catching my attention lately.

4. Would you ever write a song containing the word “perfunctory” (possibly spelled “perFUNKtory”)? And, follow-up: what would the time signature of that song be?

Alex: I actually don’t think I would. It sounds a bit… FUNKY to me, right? I would probably go a different route and choose a synonym. If I must, it would be in 2/2, maybe.

5. Leg wrestling: pre-Pet Sounds Brian Wilson versus Mariah Carey (modern, trashy version). Who will triumph?

Alex: I would definitely be rooting for Brian Wilson, but I think Mariah Carey has some legs on her. I’m also sure she gets the better workout. So, Mariah will triumph and her ego will be even bigger than it already is.

Fascinating, fascinating stuff. Thanks, guys.

Greener By Color will be playing next Tuesday at the Starline with folkers The New Limb.
